Andreas Schlegel | Academic Leadership & Faculty at LASALLE Singapore
Programme Leader, BA (Hons) Design Communication

Andreas Schlegel

andreas-schlegel
  • MSc Media Arts & Technology, University of California, USA
  • MA European Media, University of Portsmouth, UK
  • Diploma in Communication Design, Merz Akademie, University of Applied Arts, Design and Media, Stuttgart, Germany

Andreas Schlegel is a creative practitioner and educator who works across art, design and technology. He creates objects, tools and interfaces that explore how these disciplines can come together in experimental ways.

His practice focuses on emerging technologies, where outcomes are shaped by computation, interaction, networked and generative processes. He works both independently and collaboratively, presenting his work through installations, workshops, screens, performances and code.

At LASALLE College of the Arts, Andreas leads the BA (Hons) Design Communication programme and previously established the College's Media Lab. Through these roles, he has created an environment that brings together creative practice and technology. His focus on collaboration and hands-on learning has influenced both his research and teaching, helping to guide a new generation of artists, designers and creative practitioners. Many collaborative works with students and colleagues have been presented across Singapore at exhibitions, festivals and performance venues, embracing the College’s interdisciplinary approach.

Throughout his career, Andreas has explored various forms of artistic and computational work, from generative art projects, coded tools to audiovisual performances and interactive installations. His interest in creative coding has led to initiatives like the Syntfarm project and the audiovisual performance duo Electromagnetic Objects, as well as contributions to the Processing.org community especially in the early 2000s and 2010s.

His recent works focus on interactive installations and generative systems that explore human-machine relationships. These projects have been presented internationally, from contemporary art spaces in Singapore and Korea to children's biennales in Germany and the Netherlands. The Oort Cloud and the Blue Mountain series, for example, explores similar concepts in new ways where each version is designed for a particular venue or audience.

In his ongoing research, Andreas develops works that combine prototyping, generative systems, artificial intelligence explorations and human-computer interaction. His research has been published in journals and presented at international conferences, including work on telematic technologies for remote choreographic performance, interface design and movement-based computing. He has also documented his practice at the College’s Media Lab through self-published books including Coding, Sensing, Making: Media Lab Projects 2014–2018 and continues to contribute to the broader discourse on creative technology through workshops, lectures, and performances locally and internationally.

Andreas studied Communication Design at Merz Akademie in Stuttgart, Germany, and holds Master's degrees from the University of Portsmouth (2000) and the University of California, Santa Barbara (2003). Before moving to Singapore, he worked in creative roles in Stuttgart and Berlin. His individual and collaborative works have been shown in contemporary art spaces and museums locally and internationally since the early 2000s.
